THE CHILDREN OF SUDAN HAVE SUFFERED ENOUGH

Their lives are being shattered by a cycle of violence, hunger, displacement and disease. Demand urgent UK Government action to help save lives before it is too late.

In April 2023, 17-year-old Sara (her name changed to protect her identity), who lived in Khartoum at the time, witnessed the most horrific side of the war in Sudan. Her family home was raided by soldiers who shot her father dead in front of her. They then raped her. (Credit: Plan International / Peter Caton)

After 1,000 days of conflict, Sudan has reached breaking point and is now facing the world’s worst humanitarian and displacement crisis. But the world’s governments — including the UK Government — have so far failed to respond with the urgency, leadership, and determination at the scale needed.

Almost 12 million people have been driven from their homes, with more than half being women and children. Over 70% of hospitals have been destroyed or damaged in conflict-affected areas. Extreme hunger already affects 25 million people. With each day that passes, we risk more and more children dying from hunger, conflict and disease.

What we’re calling for

Alongside 12 other UK leading aid charities we’re calling on the UK Government to take urgent, concrete action to end suffering in Sudan. This means:

  • Scaling-up its diplomatic efforts, including through the UN Security Council, to push for an immediate, nationwide ceasefire as the first step towards lasting peace.
  • Protecting civilians, aid workers and local emergency responders by backing efforts to prevent further attacks, atrocities and International Humanitarian Law violations.
  • Securing rapid, safe, sustained humanitarian access across Sudan, so aid can reach every community in need.
  • Further increasing funding, especially to local aid groups and women led organisations, to help save lives.
  • Supporting a regional response to this crisis, working with neighbouring countries to increase humanitarian assistance to refugees, enable safe cross-border access for humanitarian aid, and prevent the conflict from spreading further.

Millions of children’s futures hang in the balance

After more than 1,000 days of warnings and international inaction, the crisis in Sudan has had a horrifying impact on children’s lives, with a staggering 16 million children now in dire need of support. These children have witnessed and been subject to brutal violence, have lost loved ones, have fled their homes and been forced to say goodbye to their schools and communities.

Girls are especially vulnerable in this crisis. Harrowing reports of rape and gender-based violence have surged and millions of girls face an increased risk of exploitation and starvation.

Time is quickly running out

Women, children and communities in Sudan and across the region cannot wait any longer.

Please sign this petition and demand the UK Government does all it can to help save lives before it is too late.
